North Korea slams United States for lacking ‘basic decorum’ in nuke talks

North Korea slams United States for lacking ‘basic decorum’ in nuke talks

In its statement, North Korea outlined "goodwill measures" it has taken since the historic meeting in June between President Trump and Kim Jong Un, including its discontinuation of nuclear testing and returning the remains of fallen Korean War soldiers to families in the U.S. Notably, the statement didn't directly criticize Trump.

North Korea on Thursday accused the United States of acting in bad faith, saying Washington's push for full sanctions pressure against Pyongyang would stall progress on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. "However, the USA responded to our expectation by inciting worldwide sanctions and pressure against the DPRK", the statement read, using an acronym for North Korea's official name.

"We're going to continue to apply maximum pressure to North Korea until they denuclearize, just as we are to Iran".

North Korea's nuclear weapons program has caused worldwide tension for decades and the rhetoric and threats from Kim and Trump had been especially hostile before their June meeting. Some experts say that North Korea does not want to denuclearize first or maybe denuclearize at all because it wants a long, drawn-out process that sees external aid shipped in in return for abandoning nuclear weapons.

The North Korean statement followed comments this week by top American diplomats stressing the need for Pyongyang to take additional steps toward denuclearization.

A statement from the North Korean government, broadcast via the Korea Central News Agency, accused USA figures of spouting "falsehoods" about the North Korean nuclear issue.

The North Korean government said in a statement through its mission to the United Nations that it has halted nuclear missile tests, dismantled a nuclear test site and begun to return the remains of Americans killed in the Korean War, but lamented continued criticism from USA officials.

The newspaper emphasized that North Korea has long made calls for declaring an end to the war and pushed to replace the armistice with a peace treaty, all of which it believes can be realized when the two sides cooperate. South Korea's unification minister will lead the delegation from Seoul but North Korea, which proposed the Monday meeting first, did not confirm the makeup of its delegation.

Pyongyang also returned the remains of some U.S. soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean war in a gesture meant to break down mistrust between the countries, it said.
