European Union may block "Nord stream-2": Russian politician gave the explanation

European Union may block

The United States has warned that firms that have invested in Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany were at the risk of sanctions, Reuters reported on Thursday.

In slamming Germany for its deal to double imports of Russian gas through Nord Stream II, Trump charged Berlin was spending billions of euros for its energy needs from Russia that it could be spending on Nato's defence.

At the summit's opening, U.S. President Donald Trump railed against what he characterized as a "massive gas deal" between Germany and Russian Federation, calling it inappropriate.

"The Nord Stream 2 pipeline will add supply options - not buying obligations", the company said in a statement. I think that in this context this is the most urgent: we need to ensure that transit through Ukraine continues, vice-president of the EC said.

He added the USA criticism of the planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline was rooted in Washington's desire to encourage European Union nations to buy more expensive liquefied gas from the U.S.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Trump's statement marked an escalation of a USA campaign to talk down Russian gas supplies to Europe in an attempt to push the US energy sector instead.

Mr Trump said to Stoltenberg that "When Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russian Federation".

"We're also going to discuss one other specific issue of deep concern to me and to everybody here, and I think that's the Nord Stream 2 pipeline", Kerry said then.

"The United States does not support pipelines such as Nord Stream 2 and a multi-line Turk Stream that will only increase reliance on a single source of supply", Perry told reporters. Some European leaders, however, worry Nord Stream would strengthen Russian influence in the energy sector.

"For decades Russian Federation has shown and continues to show it is a reliable supplier of energy security to Europe", Peskov added.

He also added that during the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit the issue of the Nord Stream 2 project took a significant part of the discussion during his bilateral meetings with the heads of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states.

"But the decision (for such projects - ed.) countries are sovereign".
