Lovren hails Croatia's historic World Cup achievement

Lovren claimed he was one of the best defenders on the planet on Wednesday after Croatia's win over England in the semifinals of the World Cup.

Lovren, 29, had been irked before the clash against England by questions of how he would deal with Harry Kane after the Tottenham Hotspur forward gave him the runaround in a 4-1 win for the north London side against Liverpool last October.

Key to Croatia reaching the final has been the inspirational performances of Real Madrid's 32-year-old midfielder Luka Modric, who has not only lifted the Champions League trophy four times, but is the heartbeat of this Croatian team.

At the 1998 World Cup, they exited at the semi-final stage to France.

The Croatia worldwide will be hoping to emerge victorious against France in the final, and the way he helped shut Kane down will give him confidence.

Lovren says he remembers his mum took him and they went to the basement and can't remember how long they sat there.

"People are crying, they are happy in our country - this is something historical for us", Lovren said.

"We will never forget this". People will never forget us.

"We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday".

"One minute you think everything's in control and all of a sudden the ball's in the back of the net and he's right in the middle of it".

They had previously defeated Denmark and hosts Russian Federation on penalties, becoming the first team ever to advance to the final by winning three consecutive extra time games. In the last few seasons he's always scored more than 25 goals and he's one of the best strikers in the world.

Not only that though, he believes he now deserves to be viewed as one of the best defenders in world football.
