US Disputes Report That It Opposed Breastfeeding Resolution

A spokesperson for the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) told the Times that US delegates objected to the resolution because it placed "unnecessary hurdles" in front of women who choose not to breastfeed, and "stigmatizes" formula-feeding-a claim physicians rejected on social media.

"What happened was tantamount to blackmail, with the USA holding the world hostage and trying to overturn almost 40 years of consensus on the best way to protect infant and young child health", Patti Rundall, a breastfeeding advocate who attended the assembly, told the Times.

The booklet states that companies that have policies that support nursing mothers also gain from lower turnover rates and higher productivity. Patti Rundall, who leads the British advocacy group Baby Milk Action, told the Times, "What happened was tantamount to blackmail, with the US holding the world hostage and trying to overturn almost 40 years of consensus on the best way to protect infant and young child health".

The report also noted the dilution ration must be correct or babies will suffer from malnutrition and the bottles must be adequately cleaned. "U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials", blared the article's headline.

The United States reportedly pressured Ecuador to drop sponsorship of the text, threatening trade sanctions and military aid cuts.

American officials only agreed to the resolution in Geneva when Russian Federation threw its support behind the resolution. Although with slightly altered language, the resolution was finally approved. The United States and many countries around the world now abide by the International Code on Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes, a health policy framework for promoting breastfeeding adopted in 1981.

Although formula feeding is a great option for mothers who can't breastfeed, current medical literature strongly supports breastfeeding for mothers and babies.

Health advocates said that such actions by the United States were blackmail and deeply troubling as they hold the world hostage for the sake of corporations. The position of the United States is aligned with infant formula manufacturers (the USA dominates the $70 billion industry, which has been on the downturn in wealthier nations in the last few years as more women are breastfeeding), and, unsurprisingly, was a complete about-turn from the Obama administration.

Health and Human Services spokeswoman Caitlin Oakley also described as "patently false" attempts to portray the US position as anti-breastfeeding.

"Caitlin Oakley, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services, said it's "patently false" to portray the US position as 'anti-breastfeeding'".

The Trump administration appeared to side with companies manufacturing infant formulas whose sales are threatened by women breastfeeding their newborns. What is at stake: breastfeeding saves women and children's lives. "These women should have the choice and access to alternatives for the health of their babies, and not be stigmatized for the ways in which they are able to do so", a spokesman told The Times.

And it is time to add another, however unlikely, issue to the growing list of things United States opposes the world for: breastfeeding. Breast milk provides babies with essential nutrients, necessary hormones, and antibodies that help protect infants from infections.

Other media outlets picked up the story of the Trump administration versus breastfeeding mothers.

Some places in the USA have spearheaded their own efforts to improve breastfeeding rates. The reporting says that the USA tried to water down this resolution and reportedly turned to threats against the country that planned to introduce it, Ecuador.

And if the report is true, he said that this incident suggests that when countries do not fall in line with USA policy, "they are going to go after them and penalize them economically for doing that". The Ecuadorean government quickly acquiesced. USA officials say the matter is more complicated.
