Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh reports relatively modest finances, debt repayment

A serious "investigative report" by the serious Washington Post on Thursday brought to light a shocking fact about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: he bought some baseball tickets for his friends on his personal credit cards, then later paid off the debts when his friends reimbursed him.

White House claims thousand in dollars of debt came from using credit card to buy baseball tickets, which were later reimbursed by unknown 'friends'. He added that Kavanaugh's friends paid him back for the tickets and the judge has stopped buying season tickets after racking up debt.

"Even though he has Ivy League credentials and a fancy job, he's kind of a regular, all-American guy", Helgi Walker, who worked with Kavanaugh in the George W. Bush White House told the Washington Post. Shah said some of the debts were also for home improvements.

Kavanaugh, who has been a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit since 2006, has had a large amount of credit card debt for more than a decade, ranging between $60,000 and $200,000, per The Washington Post.

The Post reported that Kavanaugh incurred between $15,000 to $50,000 in credit card debt for each account as well as a Thrift Savings Plan loan between $15,000 to $50,000.

Shah said the payments for the tickets were made at the end of 2016 and paid off early the next year.

Still, Kavanaugh "has assets of almost $1 million between the equity in his home and his retirement account", according to the report.

Regarding Kavanaugh being poorer than the others, many of whom had considerable earnings during years of non-government legal work, Shah said, "He's devoted his life to public service".

While the federal financial reporting requirements do not mandate that home values be included on the disclosure forms, the Yahoo! report said that Kavanaugh and his wife paid $1.2 million for their home in 2006. Public real estate filings indicate that the couple has refinanced their mortgage twice, most recently in 2015.

Kavanaugh's financial disclosures also showed he had two assets worth up to $65,000 in 2017, far less than current members of the Supreme Court.

A 2017 report from the Center for Public Integrity said that at least six of the nine justices were millionaires, with Justice Stephen Breyer reporting a minimum net worth of $6.15 million in 2016 and Chief Justice John Roberts a minimum reportable net worth of more than $5 million.

The vetting of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is just beginning, but his public financial disclosures make one thing clear: He's not as wealthy as many already on the high court.

The Kavanaughs live in the upscale Washington, DC suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland.
