Serbia FA complains of 'biased' referee in Switzerland match

Both players, who have a Kosovo Albanian background, celebrated their goals by making a hand gesture representing the "double eagle" of the Albanian flag. Russian Federation has long supported Serbia's claim to Kosovo, siding with their fellow Christian Orthodox Slavs against the territory's Albanian Muslim majority.

Switzerland internationals Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri and Stephan Lichtsteiner will not be suspended for performing "double eagle gesture" celebrations during their side's 2-1 win over Serbia at the World Cup finals.

Ultranationalist Serb hooligans reportedly chanted "Kill Albanians" during the game and were photographed wearing jerseys emblazoned with the face of Ratko Mladic, the Serbian general convicted previous year of genocide and crimes against humanity for overseeing the ethnic cleansing of Muslims and Croats from half of Bosnia.

But Shaqiri, who was booed constantly by fans of Serbia throughout the match, put his use of the Albanian gesture down to the heat of the moment.

"I honestly feel completely depleted", Petkovic said.

"You should never mix politics and football", he said.

"An important goal for my team and I am very proud I was able to score it for them".

"We were robbed. I wouldn't give him either a yellow or red card, I would send him to the Hague".

"It's clear that emotions surface". Though some people supported the two players, others wondered why the game was being politicised in the first place.

Xhaka's parents are originally from Kosovo and they are of Albanian heritage.

Shaqiri and Xhaka have been ordered to pay 10,000 Swiss francs (£7,600) each, while Lichtsteiner will pay 5000 (£3,800). "It was a provocation, we were playing against Switzerland, not Kosovo", team official Jovan Surbatovic told Serbian state-run broadcaster RTS.

In the 90s there were a number of brutal conflicts as the former Yugoslavia broke up.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but Serbia still does not recognise Kosovo's independence. Greater Albania is a controversial movement among Albanian ultra nationalists that seeks the illegal annexation of legally defined Serbian, Montenegrin, Greek and Macedonian territory.
