Mohamed Salah mulls quitting Egypt after Chechnya controversy

Mohamed Salah told Egypt team officials and teammates that he is considering retiring from global play because he is angry about being used as a political symbol while the World Cup squad was based in Chechnya, two people close to the player told The Associated Press.

Unhappy with his image being tarnished by a political controversy in Russia, Mohamed Salah is reportedly close to quitting Egypt.

Footballer Mo Salah has been granted honorary citizenship of Chechnya at a banquet held by its leader, Ramzan Kadyrov.

"Mohamed Salah is an honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic!".

'A source with knowledge of Salah's position on the matter confirmed this stance to ESPN FC, adding that the player is now considering his future with his national team'.

Video of the event showed a smiling Salah sitting next to Kadyrov at the dinner table, with the leader later pinning a Chechen flag badge to Salah's shirt.

The Chechnya leader has been accused of numerous human rights violations, including discrimination against women and persecuting sexual minorities. And according to CCN, the Egyptian football media team was not immediately available for comment.
