Withdrawal of India's BJP from Kashmir government could herald 'muscular policy'

Withdrawal of India's BJP from Kashmir government could herald 'muscular policy'

Soon Mufti and her party found themselves in a very hard situation particularly in its bastion south Kashmir where people started openly speaking against them, mainly over cobbling up an alliance with the BJP.

"We don't have any kind of political interference", Rawat said about governor's rule.

"They (PDP) grossly underestimate the capacity of BJP".

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "After ruining it, BJP pulls out of Kashmir".

Influential Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari was killed by unidentified gunmen as he was leaving his office in Srinagar last week.

Thus, the move is being seen as a huge embarrassment to Mehbooba Mufti as well as to her regional party. But the BJP ministers faced a situation where the government as a whole has been lacklustre in dealing with the needs of the people of these regions, he added.

"There was a perception that Kashmir betrays Delhi today it has been proven it is Delhi which betrays Kashmir".

The BJP said the three-year alliance had become "untenable" in the wake of increasing violence.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said there was no question of the Congress party allying with the PDP to form government in the state saying the "question does not arise".

The central rule ended after the PDP and the BJP stitched an alliance paving the way for the return of Mufti Sayeed as chief minister on 1 March 2015.

The scepticism was only strengthened after the two parties publicly took sharply divergent paths on various issues, the latest being extending conditional ceasefire beyond Ramzan and resuming anti-militancy operations in the Valley.

"After reviewing the work of the government in the last three years and after consultations with the Home Ministry and the agencies and after consultations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah, we have come to the conclusion that it is hard for the coalition to move forward in Jammu and Kashmir".

In the national capital, Madhav said the Centre's ruling BJP did everything feasible for the development of the state, which has been on the boil since the killing of a militant leader two years ago.

PDP in its initial reaction to pull out by BJP has said that the party have proved Delhi betrays Kashmir but Kashmir does not betray Delhi and claimed that party did not compromise on its stated positions over core issues.

"The situation will return to normalcy once dialogue is started but the GoI has practically not shown any keen interest except political statements", said a senior PDP leader.

In another scenario, the Congress, the PDP and the main opposition National Conference (NC) could come together to form a government.

Governor's rule has been imposed in Indian occupied Kashmir (IOK) after Indian President Ram Nath Kovind approved its imposition with immediate effect.

Having won all its seats from Jammu and Ladhakh, the BJP was apparently sensing a growing sense of dissatisfaction in the two regions with the performance of the coalition government.
