Rescued migrant ship arrives in Spain

A migrant rescue boat turned away by Italy and Malta arrived at the Spanish port of Valencia on Sunday, ending a grueling voyage which has made it a symbol of Europe's failure to agree on immigration.

The Aquarius boat and fleet of ships that accompany him with 629 immigrants on board has already entered Spanish maritime space, y are being escorted by frigates of Spanish Navy and in waters close to Balearic Islands and will arrive to port of Valencia as it was P Revisted Sunday morning first thing.

Upon arrival in Valencia, migrants were given preliminary health checks and then began to disembark as Spanish authorities started working on collecting details on their identities.

"These people should know that Italy no longer wants to abet the illegal immigration business, so they will have to find other [non-Italian] ports to head to", Salvini wrote on Facebook.

"Thank you to the government and people of Spain for welcoming where others rejected".

Conte said Italy is working on a proposal for a "radical paradigm change" in Europe's approach to managing mass migration that includes creating "hotspots" in the most common countries of origin and departure to identify asylum candidates.

Six days ago, Italy refused docking rights to the Aquarius, a boat jointly run by Franco-German-Italian charity SOS Mediterranee and medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

The Aquarius was sent away by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini in an apparent bid to establish his new government's anti-migration credentials. Another Italian navy ship, the Orione, came in shortly after 1 p.m.

"We were just 'go, go, go!'" said Max Avis, the deputy search and rescue chief of the Aquarius. Italy and Malta had denied entry to the Aquarius last weekend before Spain stepped in to offer them a safe harbor. As many as 933 people have been rescued in the Western Mediterranean and Straits of Gibraltar over the past 48 hours, the Spanish sea rescue service Salvamento Maritimo said on its twitter account. I hope they take in the other 66,629 refugees.

The leader of the racist League party has previously threatened to expel half a million migrants.

The plight of the Aquarius, stuck off the coast of Sicily for days as both Italy and Malta refusing docking permission, reflects the intense European Union tensions over migration.

More than 1.8 million migrants have arrived in Europe since 2014, and Italy is now sheltering more than 170,000 asylum seekers, as well as an estimated 500,000 unregistered migrants.

Spain's minister of public works, said due to their ordeal, the migrants from the rescue ship Aquarius will be granted a "special authorization" to remain in the country for one month before "they will be dealt with according to our laws without exception".

France was particularly critical, with President Emmanuel Macron accusing the Italians of "cynicism and irresponsibility", prompting Salvini to respond that "saving lives is a duty, turning Italy into a huge refugee camp is not" and suggesting France could take the Aquarius passengers.

The number of people fleeing poverty and conflict by boat to Spain doubled in 2017.

Almost 800 people have died this year while trying to cross the Mediterranean, according to the International Organization for Migration.
