Civilian Shoots, Kills Gunman at Walmart; 2 Others Hurt

A gunman wounded a few people before being fatally shot by a bystander at the store in Washington state's city Sunday evening.

The gunman who was killed in the parking lot of a Tumwater Walmart by an armed citizen on Sunday had fired shots inside the store and stolen ammunition before being confronted by the armed citizen who had followed him outside, police said on Monday.

Police investigate a shooting spree a Walmart in Tumwater, Washington. He is in critical condition, Laura Wohl, spokeswoman for the Tumwater Police Department, told reporters.

The man from Oakville retrieved a first-aid kit from his auto and provided aid to the driver who had been shot until medics arrived, police said. The gunman then circled around to the other side of the auto, and that's when his father made a last-ditch effort to leave and stomped on the gas pedal.

They believe the man shot dead in the Walmart parking lot is the same suspect in all three incidents.

Megan Chadwick from Eugene, Oregon, was with her husband and four children inside the Walmart when the gunman entered. After shooting the suspect, the citizen retrieved a first-aid kit from his auto and provided aid to the driver who had been shot until medics arrived, the news release says. There are no other suspects in the carjacking incidents or reported shootings. Police say a 47-year-old man from Oakville, Washington, shot Day as he tried to carjack another driver.

He then left his auto and attempted to carjack at least two other people, fired shots at the vehicles, and demanded owners abandon their cars.

KCPQ reports police said there is no danger to the public. That victim was treated for gunshot wounds and airlifted to a Seattle hospital.

Darren Gossler of Elma was in the store when the shooting started. But we still don't know if they both fired or only one of them did. When she got outside, she said she heard more shots.

Caitlyn Wallner of Tenino was standing in the self-checkout line. She heard "pop, pop, pop", and a man yelling "there's a guy shooting".

"People are grabbing their kids and pushing them in front of them and saying go, go, go and starting heading toward the nearest exit and you just start running and you don't know where to run to in all honesty", said Adams.

The action then moved into the parking lot. "This (suspect) could have taken out more people, wounded or killed", said witness Brian Adams.
