Three dead and more than 200 reported injured in Japan natural disaster

Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said two people were found with no vital signs and 41 others had been injured.

All trains and subways across Osaka city were halted, and the bullet train that travels through the region was halted as far as Fukuoka in southern Japan.

The natural disaster struck Osaka, one of Japan's main manufacturing heartlands.

Shinji Toda, seismology professor at Tohoku University, said the Uemachi fault in Osaka Prefecture could be related to the latest quake.

Meantime, a 5.6 magnitude quake struck near Guanagazapa in Guatemala's Escuintla province just after 8:30 p.m local time (11:30 p.m ET) Sunday, according to the USGS.

Among the casualties was a nine-year-old girl who died in the city of Takatsuki, north of Osaka city, reportedly trapped by a collapsed wall following the 5.3-magnitude quake.

According to local police and rescuers, two people are trapped in an elevator at a train station in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, east of Osaka.

Multiple small aftershocks followed the quake, and an official from Japan's meteorological agency warned residents to remain on guard.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters the government was "working united, with its first priority on saving people's lives". Public broadcaster NHK said an 80-year-old man had been killed, also by a collapsing wall.

Some areas in Osaka are reportedly experiencing power shortage.

The Japanese government had not received reports of major damage as of 8.30am, spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

Kansai Electric Power said no irregularities had been detected at the Mihama, Takahama and Ohi nuclear plants after the quake. An 84-year-old man in nearby Ibaraki died when a bookshelf fell on him at home, city officials say.

The quake struck an important industrial area of central Japan.

Despite its relatively low magnitude, the quake caused quite a shake, registering a lower six on the Japanese experiential scale of up to seven, meaning it is hard to stay standing. The strongest shaking was north of Osaka, but the quake rattled large parts of western Japan, including Kyoto, the agency said. I thought it was a nightmare because I was so confused.
