Washington is only state to keep net neutrality

Since Pai's passage of the Restoring Internet Freedom order, supporters of net neutrality have taken several approaches to prevent the new rules from going into effect.

Democrats are fewer than 50 votes from advancing a resolution in the House of Representatives to reinstate the 2015 rules. The Republican-led House, and President Trump, are both thought to be unlikely to back the Senate's measure.

A new set of rules at the Federal Communications Commission went into effect Monday, ending consumer protections that assure equal legal broadband access that doesn't slow or block certain sources.

Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democratic FCC commissioner who has been an outspoken net neutrality advocate, said in a statement on Monday that the battle over how the internet is regulated is far from over. This is typically used by streaming audio and video services for mobile devices to provide a benefit to their subscribers by reducing cellular data use.

The now-defunct rules required companies that provided internet service to consumers to abide by a series of rules that prevented them from blocking lawful websites, manipulating internet speeds or striking deals with companies like Google and Facebook for so-called "internet fast lanes".

The FCC changes were passed last December, shepherded by Trump-appointed FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who says the new lighter-touch rules are more market-friendly than the "utility-style regulation" in the Obama-era.

Supporters of net neutrality are pushing state lawmakers to fight the repeal, but Mayer says this cannot be done at the state level.

The disclosure will help regulators spot anti-competitive practices, according to a summary of the rules distributed by the FCC. ISPs will be able to charge us more to access sites we now visit for free, cap how much data we're allowed to use, redirect us from sites we are trying to use to sites they want us to use instead (like Bing instead of Google), and block us from being able to access apps, products, and information offered by their competitors or other companies they don't like. Almost 50 more House lawmakers must sign a discharge petition introduced by Congressman Mike Doyle in order to force a vote.

"The momentum around the country - from small towns to big cities, from state houses to court houses, from governors' executive actions to action in Congress - is proof the American people are not done fighting for an open internet", Rosenworcel said.

But, experts say not to worry, changes won't come overnight, and might not at come all.

Broadband providers "remain committed to the principles under which internet innovation has thrived", Mr. Spalter said.
