Canada part of winning World Cup bid for 2026 men's soccer showcase

Canada will be co-hosting the games with the USA and Mexico, as part of a joint North American bid.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino is believed to strongly support the North American bid because the three countries involved backed him for the presidency in 2016 when he took over after the reign of Blatter.

This was the first World Cup vote since 2010, when two hosts were named and afterwards investigators from the U.S. and Switzerland unveiled corruption on an unprecedented scale. While the United States might be the world's largest economy, Cordeiro said to federation presidents, it is really more like a tiny nation when it comes to soccer.

The joint bid's plans call for 60 of the 80 games to be played in the United States - including all matches from the quarterfinals onward - while Canada and Mexico host 10 apiece.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from NY, said: "While the official name of the bid is United 2026, the three potential host nations are right now anything but united".

U.S. Soccer has spent the past decade-plus trying to return the World Cup to this country for the first time since 1994.

In 2010 it lost out to South Africa as the African continent hosted for the first time.

Morocco's bid was supported by David Trezeguet, former Real Madrid man Roberto Carlos and Noureddine Naybet, who was critical of the news and disappointed about his country missing out again.

He says "I was fighting for Morocco and for Africa because at a certain time (FIFA) wanted to eliminate Morocco before going to the vote, and now, they are at the vote and I think it's a victory also of my intervention, especially". It will be the first ever World Cup that will bring together 48 teams hence the need for more facilities and proper management. It's already been confirmed that Toronto will host four out of ten games, and Edmonton and Montreal will each host three. The Football Association has not hosted the tournament since 1966, having failed in bids for 1990, 2006 and 2018. The final is expected to be played at MetLife Stadium, just outside NY.

Meanwhile, Ghana's absence comes as a blow to Morocco who had won the support of Ghana over joint bidders United States, Mexico and Canada. If the 2026 World Cup can propel MLS owners to make the necessary investment to build teams capable of winning over that considerable segment of non-believers, while convincing corporate America and the media establishment in the United States to buy in, there's no limit to how far the sport could go.

The vote started after the bidding nations introduced their bids in front of FIFA delegates and football association representatives. The tournament will be played at 12 stadiums across 11 host cities between June 14 and July 15.

In April, Blatter had tweeted: "Just recall a fundamental principal in FIFA: Decision taken in 2011: the congress shall decide on the attribution of the World Cup 2026 - and not any sub-committee or task-force".

But the North American bid feared it could lose out if the vote becomes a referendum on the popularity of US President Donald Trump.
