Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the United States ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting.

North Korea's state media has described the talks between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump as part of a "changed era" - the secretive state's first comment on the momentous summit.

"Thanks PM Lee for spending $20 million of taxpayers money, which can. help a lot of needy families in Singapore to survive", posted one Facebook user.

"We've got a very interesting meeting. tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely", Trump said on Monday.

Trump said on May 24 he was scrapping it after threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by US officials demanding unilateral disarmament.

"Kim and Trump both seem to want the same thing: a dramatic reversal in the U.S".

Laboriously negotiated past nuclear deals, considered breakthroughs at the time, broke down on North Korea's extreme sensitivity to allowing in outsiders to look at whether they're dismantling their nuclear facilities, many of which are thought to be hidden.

The Associated Press reports Trump was originally scheduled to depart early Wednesday morning, however he will now leave Tuesday night after a day of meetings with Kim and other leaders of North Korea. Both leaders have committed to "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", but it's unclear what specific steps North Korea is willing to take to get there.

He said if diplomacy fails to move in the right direction, the sanctions "will increase".

Trump briefly called off the summit a few weeks ago before agreeing again to the meeting. A USA official says Monday that the leaders will meet for up to two hours before an expanded bilateral meeting with their respective advisers.

He declined, however, to reveal any details of the preliminary discussions being held Monday between USA and North Korean officials. "That's necessary and appropriate".

A sit-down with the USA president is something North Korea has long pushed for.

North Korea had earlier criticized US national security adviser John Bolton, who had called for North Korea to quickly give up its nuclear arsenal in a deal that would mirror Libya's abandonment of its program for weapons of mass destruction. "If they don't denuclearise, that will not be acceptable", Mr Trump said ahead of the meeting. But he did not address human rights issues when he met with Kim's top aide, Kim Yong-cho. Critics say ignoring the issue risks squandering leverage and abandoning the North's victims.

Kim was not believed to have left his hotel since a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong soon after his arrival in the city on Sunday, but he ventured out on Monday evening.

Trump's arrival came just hours after Kim, wearing his trademark dark "Mao suit" and distinctive high-cut hairstyle, landed in the ultra-modern city-state on his longest trip overseas as head of state. "We would, of course, have offered hospitality".

Trump was presented with a birthday cake by his Singaporean host.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

Some foreign-policy experts said the breakdown at the Group of 7 meeting would play to North Korea's advantage, since Mr. Trump can ill afford a second failed summit, back to back.

Trump has said he'll know within minutes whether a deal can be made.
