The 'trend' that is troubling the US

Suicide rates inched up in almost every USA state from 1999 through 2016, according to a government report released Thursday.

Suicide rates are up by 30 percent across the nation since 1999, federal health officials reported Thursday.

World Health Organization says it is common for individuals with severe depression to think about suicide.

In 2016, almost 45,000 people lost their lives to suicide, making it one of the leading causes of death on the rise in the U.S.

In the year 2016 alone, 45,000 people died from suicide and Schuchat warned, "Our data show the problem is getting worse".

Experts say confronting the issues needs to be a priority.

This week's report found that many suicides were in people with no known mental illness.

Earlier this year Gov. Ralph Northam signed a new law that requires the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to report its progress and activity on suicide prevention every year. Each one of us can learn the words to say when we're anxious about someone, and we can learn how to be there to keep others safe. Nikki Kontz, the group's clinical director, said one of the first steps at preventing suicide is reaching out.

Keltz believes talking about mental health and suicide will help erase the stigma associated with it. "We think that a comprehensive approach to suicide is what's needed". And so, that's one of the things that this study really shows us.

He also said it's important to take time for yourself; staying active, eating well and setting aside time to do what you like to do can help with suicidal thoughts.

Adults aged 45 to 64 had the largest increase, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention report.

She recommends being direct once they've opened up.

"Suicide has been kind of a taboo conversation for many years", says Chief Clinical Officer Kelly Olson. People ages 10-24 had the lowest rate. Rates increased significantly among males in 34 states and females in 43 states. The authorities ruled his cause of death as suicide by hanging.

"From individuals and communities to employers and healthcare professionals, everyone can play a role in efforts to help save lives and reverse this troubling rise in suicide". Asking if they've had suicidal thoughts is not harmful and lets them know you care, she said. Letting them hear themselves say it out loud could be enough. Anyone seeking suicide prevention help can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. All calls are confidential.
