Nadal wins 11th French Open title

Spain's Rafael Nadal defeated Austria's Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the French Open on Sunday to win the season's second Grand Slam for a record 11th time.

Fair enough Thiem was demolished by Nadal in last year's semi-final in Paris but today's seventh seed has added more aggression and self belief to his game. The Spaniard got early breaks in the second and third set, to keep a battling, but baffled, Thiem at bay.

Thiem beat Nadal on clay twice, including last month in Madrid that ended Nadal's 21-match winning streak on clay and his streak of 50 straight sets won on his favorite surface.

This is Nadal's 17th grand slam title.

Nadal said he expects to see Thiem back in a final one day - and with a different result.

The signs were already ominous for Thiem at that stage because in 112 best-of-five-set matches, Nadal had never lost after taking the first set.

Rafael Nadal is the French Open 2018 victor.

With Novak Djokovic far from his best and Andy Murray still a question mark after hip surgery, per Kevin Mitchell of the Guardian, the route for the likes of Federer and Nadal is about as clear as they could hope.

Tennis Super Star Rafael Nadal has again proved his mantle as the King of Clay. After Nadal won the first, there was an air of inevitability.

But in the third set, comfortably ahead by a break at 2-1, something unusual happened-Nadal's left hand cramped.

Sunday marked the first time Nadal had faced a player from a younger tennis generation in a Grand Slam final.

"What you did and what you are doing", Thiem told Nadal during the trophy ceremony, "is one of the most outstanding things that any athlete is doing in any sport".

Everyone is used to seeing Rafael Nadal dominate the clay-court season, particularly in Paris.

Thiem was on the couch, watching on TV, in 2005, when Nadal earned his first Grand Slam trophy in Paris at age 19.

Thiem was considered the stiffest test for Nadal at the French Open and understandably so.

Although Nadal subsequently received treatment on his forearm it seemingly had little adverse effect and, after a second break of serve, his 11th triumph was secured at the fifth time of asking when Thiem sent a return long.

After the victory - which saw Nadal claim his 17th Grand Slam title in total, just three behind Roger Federer's all-time record of 20 - social media was quick to laud the 32-year-old's staggering achievement.

The win helped him extend his incredible run at Roland Garros to 66 wins and just one defeat over 10 years.

Nadal was rampant when he broke early in the second, but Thiem raised his game to force a break point when Nadal served at 4-2 - a game in which the Spaniard was warned for slow play. When he first halted play, Nadal removed that tape, which he said let his circulation improve.
