Italy PM agrees with Trump that Russian Federation should return to G8

U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were all jokes and smiles for the media as they met at the Group of Seven leaders summit in Quebec on Friday, but neither budged on the serious trade dispute between them.

It started on CNN's "State of the Union" when Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the White House was angered by Trudeau's comments during the news conference that Canada must stand up for itself and that recently imposed us tariffs on steel and aluminum are "insulting". Later, the document was made public.

In Washington, the top White House economic adviser accused Canada's prime minister on Sunday of betraying Trump with "polarising" statements on U.S. trade policy that risked undermining the American leader on the eve of a historic summit with North Korea.

Speaking after US President Donald Trump said he favoured Russia's return to a G8, receiving Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte's endorsement, Juncker said "we must safeguard EU principles, among which, European states, like Russian Federation, must respect worldwide rules".

By ordering his representatives to back out of the communique, Trump appeared to be asserting his oft-stated aim of upsetting the status quo whether by pulling out of the global climate accord or the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran or threats to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Trump addressed the subject of global trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit on Saturday, saying that he does not want to see other countries take advantage of the U.S. over trade.

He told the G7 leaders during the summit that the United States wanted a quick end to trade practices that he said have led to an exodus of American companies and jobs to other countries.

The US president, who arrived at the summit in Canada late and left early to fly to Singapore to prepare for his summit with Kim Jong-un, shocked fellow leaders with a bellicose press conference on Saturday in which he attacked the trade policies of other countries.

The US had imposed hefty tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from key allies the Europe Union, Canada and Mexico last week.

Former FBI Director James Comey also weighed in, tweeting Saturday night on the US-Canadian relationship.

But foreign leaders publicly and pointedly rejected Trump's demands, raising the possibility of further escalation - particuarly after Trump's recently imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico and said doing so protected United States national security.

An official from the French G7 negotiating team has painted a stark picture of the divide over climate change, saying: "We have six leaders on one sideb and the United States on the other".

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", said Navarro. "To build that up again will take much longer", he told reporters in Berlin. "That is not a trade deal", he said, according to a report by ABC News. "Our tariffs are in response to his of 270 per cent on dairy!"

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing", Trump said. He made first-name references to "Angela" and "Justin", and he repeatedly insisted he blamed previous U.S. leaders, not foreign ones, for what he sees as the global trade imbalance.

'I think there are various discussions about alternatives that would not be that, and that would not be entirely destabilizing for a trade deal, and I think we are open to creativity, ' he said. "Tariffs will come way down".

This year, the summit will be Friday and Saturday in Quebec, Canada.

The president also referred to Trudeau's "false statements", which he didn't explain.
