U.S. soldier killed, five wounded in 'enemy attack' in Somalia

The multinational force "came under mortar and small-arms fire at approximately 2:45pm Mogadishu time [11:45 GMT], killing one U.S. service member and injuring four United States service members and one partner force member", the USA military's Africa Command said in a statement.

The troops had been on a mission to clear al-Shabab from contested areas as well as villages the armed group's fighters controlled "and establish a permanent combat outpost" to expand the reach of the Somali state, the USA military's Africa Command said.

U.S. forces were offering "advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission", U.S. Africa Command said, noting that the mission was created to increase the Somali government's ability to provide services to innocent civilians under al-Shabab rule.

An American special operations soldier has been killed in an attack in Somalia that also wounded four other USA military personnel and one Somali soldier. "Three U.S. service members and the one partner force wounded were medically evacuated to receive additional treatment".

Earlier this month, al-Shabab claimed a series of attacks across the country, according to the SITE Intelligence group.

A US Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) came under attack today in the Bar-Sanguni area near Kismayo in Somalia. The injured service members were medevaced to Djibouti, where US Africa Command (AFRICOM) maintains its Camp Lemonnier base.

Per U.S. military policy, the soldier's name will not be released until next of kin has been notified.

The U.S. had pulled out of the Horn of Africa nation after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets.

Friday's attack in Jubaland is likely to put renewed scrutiny on America's counterterror operations in Africa.

"We also injured four USA soldiers", Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operations spokesman, told Reuters on late Friday. Al-Shabab has been blamed for the October truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed more than 500 people.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somalia", Trump tweeted.

Mostly composed of special operators such as Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs and Marine Raiders, the USA forces in Somalia have conducted frequent raids and drone strikes on Shabaab training camps throughout Somalia. Since 2007, Al-Shabaab has been fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia.

The stepped up USA campaign in Somalia comes as an global African Union force prepares to withdraw from its military mission in the country. It was pushed out of Mogadishu in recent years but continues to control rural areas in the south and central regions. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.
