How to get help for someone who might be suicidal

The rise in suicide rates was highest in the central, northern region of the US, with North Dakota, for example, seeing a 57.6 percent increase since 1999.

The biggest increase in suicides was in North Dakota, where the rate jumped more than 57 percent.

Previous CDC reports have found rate increases of 80 percent among white, middle-age women since 1999, and of 89 percent among Native Americans.

The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.

In the year 2016 alone, 45,000 people died from suicide and Schuchat warned, "Our data show the problem is getting worse".

The analysis found that slightly more than half the people who had killed themselves did not have any known mental-health condition.

"Relationship problems or loss, substance misuse; physical health problems; and job, money, legal or housing stress often contributed to risk for suicide", the CDC report notes.

"Suicide in this country really is a problem that is impacted by so many factors". "She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives".

The high suicide rate is also a concern in New Hampshire, said Patricia Tilley, deputy director of New Hampshire's division of public health services.

"You can't see it", said Dr. Roy Perlis, a professor of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Suicide prevention largely focuses on addressing mental health treatment, the CDC found, suggesting that a wider variety of preventive measures could be taken.

KTVU spoke with Courtney Brown from San Francisco Suicide Prevention Center to ask her more about the CDC study.

While the study emphasizes the need for more prevention resources, predicting suicides can be hard.

However, he said, better records are being kept on suicide statistics.

On one hand Brown said the series may have gotten some teens to speak out on suicide as an important issue and they may have shared experiences.

Middle-aged adults - age 45 to 64 - had the largest rate increase, rising to 19.2 per 100,000 in 2016 from 13.2 in 1999. The series includes content warnings before the start of some episodes, as well as directives to contact suicide hotlines by the series' actors.

In New Orleans, researchers led by Orleans Parish Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse also recently studied the high rates of suicide in the city even a decade after Hurricane Katrina.

If you or someone you love needs help, the National Suicide Prevention hotline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text "talk" to 741741.

There is a national campaign urging people to #Bethe1to help save a life by asking and listening whenever they notice warning signs in someone they know.
