Cut melons linked to salmonella outbreak in Michigan, Indiana

The CDC says it's linked back to pre-chopped melons sold at Walmart stores and said the fruit salad at Walmart stores should also be tossed.

The Centers for Disease Control is tracking a multi-state outbreak of salmonella linked to pre-cut melon that has already sickened 60 people, including 10 in Missouri.

Those who reported illness said they had eaten pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew melon, or a fruit salad mix with melon.

A salmonella outbreak affecting five states including IL and Missouri is linked to pre-cut melons, according to IL health officials.

Salmonella symptoms tend to include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours after someone eats the contaminated food.

The melon products have been recalled, but authorities advise consumers not to eat pre-cut melon products produced at Caito Foods and packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers. Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 30, 2018 to May 28, 2018, and cases range in age from less than 1 to 97 years old. The CDC said people can contract the virus from touching live poultry or their environment, even if the birds appear to be healthy and clean.

Walmart stores in IL have removed pre-cut melons from their shelves, according to IDPH. However, diarrhea for some people may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.

"This investigation is moving rapidly".
