Val Kilmer Will Rejoin Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun' Sequel

Val Kilmer Will Rejoin Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun' Sequel

The original film, directed by Tony Scott, featured Cruise as a young naval aviator Pete Maverick Mitchell aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

Less than a week after Tom Cruise confirmed that the highly anticipated sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun, Top Gun 2 had begun filming, the new production has added another cast member.

Val Kilmer, 58, is reprising the Tom "Iceman" Kazansky pilot role which shot him to superstardom 32 years ago in 1986's Top Gun, according to The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter. The film also starred Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins. In 2015 Kilmer announced that he'd been offered the film, which he accepted without reading the script. However, Kilmer later updated his Facebook post, saying he "jumped the topgun" in making the announcement.

Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit cinemas July 12, 2019. "An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent..." Now, not only is Tom Cruise heading back into the lead role, but Val Kilmer is also heading back to the big screen as Iceman.

"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology, and fifth-generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce, so it's really [about] exploring the "end of an era" of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today".

"Listen, it's an iconic character that [Cruise] helped create", the film's producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, told ET past year.
