Residents in the nearby areas should also be prepared to evacuate with little notice, officials said.

Thousands in the Puna district had to evacuate after lava fissures started opening in neighbourhoods a month ago.

Janet Snyder, a spokeswoman for Hawaii County, said 117 homes have been burned down by red hot lava. Officials had previously been updating the number of structures burned because it was hard to tell from aerial surveys which were homes or other buildings.

Hawaii County Civil Defense continues to coordinate the effort to evacuate, and in some cases rescue, the residents in the lava-inundated area of Kapoho, as Fissure 8 is sending a robust lava channel downslope to the ocean. The crew landed and confirmed the three people had no cellphone reception. The flow has prompted warnings from Hawaii County Civil Defense authorities about laze - steam formed of lava and haze that sends hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass particles into the air.

Health hazards of laze include lung damage, and eye and skin irritation. The lava from the Kilauea volcano has covered an area of 9 square kilometres - four times as big as New York's Central Park, according to USGS.

He said fissure No. 8 in Leilani Estates was producing fountains of lava 220 feet high. "Persons in violation of this order are subject to arrest and will be liable for any costs associated with rescue operations in the mandatory evacuation area".

A man ploughed through a checkpoint near an intersection where lava was approaching on Monday, authorities detailed.

Steve Bergfeld with the Department of Land and Natural Resources says with further expected loss of forest habitat and defoliation due to lava inundation and volcanic emissions, the remnant and sub-populations may no longer persist, rapidly decline or become further fragmented and/or contract in range. This lava flow is about a half-mile wide on its front-end.

That figure "is the highest rate ever measured there", USGS seismologist Brian Shiro said, according to Big Island Video News. "This is something most of us will never see in our lifetime", he said.

Those earthquakes have continued near the summit, according to Jim Kauahikaua, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It's not known when the heavily visited Kilauea section of the park will reopen.

Soldiers from the Hawaii National Guard monitor sulfur dioxide gas levels near a lava flow in Leilani Estates during ongoing eruptions of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii, U.S., June 3, 2018.
