Facebook shared user data with Apple and Samsung

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared before Congress in April to answer questions about data the company provided to third parties about their users.

The new accusations center on Facebook's use of special APIs - application programming interfaces - that it created to allow users' data and profile information to be integrated into devices.

"As a result, your Mac will look like everyone else's Mac", Federighi said, "and it will be dramatically more hard for data companies to uniquely identify your device".

The partnerships themselves are no big secret - Facebook has been cultivating them for years, and they're often announced publicly, as Facebook confirmed in a blog post.

"Given that these APIs enabled other companies to recreate the Facebook experience, we controlled them tightly from the get-go", it states.

Facebook has formed data-sharing partnerships with 60 device makers, including Apple and Microsoft, giving them access to information of users and even their friends, a media report has claimed, weeks after the social media faced massive backlash for improperly sharing personal data of up to 87 million people. Furthermore, the strong partition present on BlackBerry handsets along with the comprehensive permission model and app isolation techniques we employ would prevent any unauthorized access to our user's private data. The FTC is now investigating Facebook's privacy practices in light of the Cambridge Analytica data misuse scandal.

Under scrutiny this time is the company's practice of sharing information about its users with dozens of smartphone and tablet makers.

Kogan developed an app that required people to sign in using their Facebook accounts - and that then harvested data about those users and their friends, that was then used by Cambridge Analytica to develop psychological profiles of USA voters ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

While Facebook's leaders said that the kind of access exploited by the political consulting firm in 2014 was cut off by the next year as it prohibited developers from collecting information from users' friends.

In interviews to The New York Times, Facebook however defended its data sharing agreement and asserted that these are consistent with its privacy policies, the FTC agreement and pledges to users.

"Our partnership and engineering teams approved the Facebook experiences these companies built", Archibong wrote. Facebook has had to rethink its relationship to such third-party data providers and developers.

That's right, Facebook - which brought us such hits as Cambridge Analytica and "maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools" - is the real victim here.

Zuckerberg was adamant before Congress that Facebook is seriously committed to users' privacy. "Consumers have the right to know how their personal information is being used, and the companies we trust with our information have a critical responsibility to protect it", Underwood said in a statement.
