Summit With North Korea Is Back On

Summit With North Korea Is Back On

Within a day, both sides were in new talks to save the summit, and Kim Yong-chol flew to NY this week to meet Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"You people are going to have to travel, because you'll be in Singapore on June 12th", he told reporters awaiting word of the meeting. "I didn't cancel the meeting".

"I think it will be very positive. So we will see where it leads".

Trump said he'd told North Korea's leaders to "take your time" with the peace process.

"Doesn't mean it gets all done at one meeting. That I can tell you".

Kim Yong Chol is the most senior North Korean visitor to the United States since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok visited Washington in 2000 to meet President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Pompeo said he believes North Korea is contemplating a new strategic path forward, but he cautioned that the country would "have to choose a path that is fundamentally different" to achieve security - meaning complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.

Tensions between the United States of America and North Korea flared after US Vice President Mike Pence compared the North Korea situation to Libya, provoking a furious reply from the Kim regime. He delivered a personal letter to President Trump from Kim Jong Un at the White House. It's the highest-level meeting between a USA president and a North Korean official since 2000.

Trump and Kim spent more than an hour in the Oval Office on Friday discussing issues in the run-up to a June 12 summit in Singapore between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

The Trump administration has pressed for the North to rapidly takes steps to turn over its nuclear program, while Pyongyang has said it expects a slower, step-by-step process in which the North receives reciprocal benefits, including economic incentives.

The meeting was closed to the press, but Pompeo tweeted "Good working dinner with Kim Yong Chol in NY tonight".

After exchanging threats and insults since Mr Trump became President previous year, the United States and North Korea have been trying to set up a summit - originally planned for Singapore on June 12 - between their leaders, at which Mr Trump wants to pressure Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons.

Washington has demanded that the North agree to a "complete, verifiable and irreversible" end to Pyongyang's nuclear program, which is close to the point where it could threaten U.S. cities with missile strikes.

The usually secretive Kim Jong-un has given a glimpse behind North Korea's political veil by allowing news cameras inside the nation's parliamentary building during his historic meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. But there are lingering doubts on whether he will ever fully relinquish his nuclear arsenal, which he may see as his only guarantee of survival in a region surrounded by enemies.

"I look forward to seeing the letter and I look forward to June 12 where hopefully we can make progress", Trump said. North Korea's conciliatory response to that letter appears to have put the summit back on track.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2nd L) holds talks with North Korean envoy Kim Yong-chol (2nd R) in NY, on May 31, 2018.
