Thousands evacuate as Storm Alberto churns toward Florida

The storm prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations over the weekend.

Rain was in the forecast for the Orlando area as subtropical storm Alberto approached the Florida Panhandle Monday morning.

Alberto's high winds also led to concerns over the threat of storm surge and risky rip currents from the coasts of Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean.

The system is forecast to move over the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday.

Panovich said the Charlotte area will be under a medium risk of severe weather with flash flooding being the primary concern this week.

The center is located 85 miles west-northwest of the Dry Torgutas in Florida.

Stick with WCNC.com for the latest forecast. New flash flood watches have been issued for parts of the Carolinas, where 2 to 6 inches of rain is possible.

Additionally, some of the strong tropical thunderstorms east of the center of circulation could spawn brief tornadoes. Meanwhile, areas along the Florida Panhandle endured tropical storm conditions as thunderstorms and high winds from the northern bands of the storm reached inland.

By midday Sunday, the US Southeast was seeing 50-mile-per-hour (80-km-per-hour) winds and up to 10 inches of rain in some places, Ken Graham, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center, said in a video briefing.

Alberto got an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, which doesn't officially start until Friday.

Jeffrey Medlin, meteorologist in charge in Mobile, says even after the storm moves north there will still be swells coming up from the south.

Alberto, the first named Atlantic storm of 2018 which spun up days before the formal start of the hurricane season, is forecast to pack maximum sustained winds near 50 miles per hour (85 kph) and dump as much as 12 inches (30 cm) of rain, slamming an area from MS to western Georgia, it said.

The governors of Florida, Mississippi and Alabama have declared states of emergencies ahead of the subtropical storm hitting land. As it travels up the warm waters of the Gulf, it could well become a full tropical storm.

"But I haven't seen the weather like this for long - that lasts so long", she said.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is making landfall near Laguna Beach, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. An additional 1-4 inches of rain will be possible, which could result in minor flooding. The storm was expected to make landfall later in the day.
