Ireland ends abortion ban as 'quiet revolution' transforms country

It was a battle for the very soul of a traditionally conservative Roman Catholic nation that has seen a wave of liberalization in recent years.

Totally 33.6 percent of voters chose to retain the present abortion laws, or widely known as the Eighth Amendment among locals, that virtually ban abortions in the country, said the returning officer Barry Ryan.

Ryan declared the above results of the referendum in front of a large cheering crowd of people gathering at a central count center at Dublin Castle, a main government complex, in the Irish capital of Dublin.

Voters went to the polls after a campaign that aroused deep emotions on both sides.

On Saturday, Penny Mordaunt - who is responsible for the women and equalities brief in government - said the referendum signalled a "historic and great day for Ireland" and a "hopeful one for Northern Ireland". For opponents, it would be a betrayal of Ireland's commitment to protect the unborn.

McAuliffe noted that when Ireland legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, it was the first country to do so by popular vote.

Theresa Sweeney, a repeal supporter, was one of the first to arrive at a church polling station in Dublin.

"You can still passionately believe that the decision of the people is wrong, as I happen to do, and accept it", said McGuirk. Prepare yourself: you might just shed the odd tear while reading these people's inspiring efforts to make it home in time to vote.

He added that the outcome proves that Ireland "trusts and respects women to make their own decision and choices".

There have been five previous votes on repealing the Eighth Amendment, all of which failed.

"I'd asked people to keep those children in their thoughts and prayers today, and their mothers and those involved in taking their lives".

The Republic's Health Minister said if the Eighth Amendment is repealed then the Government could get on with the job of putting in place "sensible laws" with safeguards that would enable them to support women in crisis pregnancy.

The amendment, or article 40.3.3 of the constitution, gives unborn foetuses and pregnant mothers an equal right to life - and is, in effect, a ban on abortion. Since 2014, abortion has been legal only in rare cases when a woman's life is in danger.

Emma Jayne Geraghty, who works for Amnesty International Canada in Toronto, said she is going home to vote because she once had to leave the country to access abortion services in the United Kingdom. The newspaper that makes the strong case for abortion as an issue of economic equality, with those most vulnerable disproportionately affected by crisis pregnancies and unable to afford travel overseas?

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar called the result the culmination of a "quiet revolution".

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said Ireland's vote was a "hopeful" day for Northern Ireland.

The prime minister, a medical doctor who came to power previous year, spoke to RTE News in advance of the announcement of the referendum's official results, expected later Saturday.

President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina cast their votes in Dublin on Friday morning. Later, my abortion fund not stretching to a hotel room, I would bleed and sweat in a cheap hostel, many miles from home.

"For him, it's a different Ireland that we're moving onto", said Colm O'Riain, a 44-year-old teacher referring to his son Ruarai, born 14 weeks premature in November who was in his arms.

Letters to the editor published Friday in the Irish Independent newspaper contained several emotional arguments urging voters to reject the repeal movement.

"If we vote "yes" every unborn, wanted and unwanted, will have zero rights", wrote Frances Kelleher, from Killarney. One concern that I heard several people express was that abortion would be used as contraception, an idea that seems to come from the misogynistic myth that the No campaign has helped to conjure, one where women can not be trusted and abortion is "on demand", as if it were a Netflix series.
