Qualcomm announces new 700-tier Snapdragon processors

Qualcomm has now announced a new 700 series lineup of chipsets with premium specs to overcome the inferiority complex in consumers' minds regarding the 600 series when compared to its flagship 800 series processors, despite the 660 being a strong contender.

The Snapdragon 710 is built utilising the 10nm FinFET manufacturing process - the same as the Snapdragon 845. Besides that the Snapdragon 710 also comes with 4K HDR playback support - a once exclusive feature to the company's 800-series processors.

"The Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform is the first in the newly defined and highly significant 700-tier, offering technologies and features previously only available in our premium-tier mobile platforms". The Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform's architectures are said to run on-device AI applications quickly and efficiently. The company has now launched the Snapdragon 710, a processor that is like a mini Snapdragon 845. These include up to 2x overall performance improvements in AI applications thanks to its multi-core AI engine as well as up to a 20 percent reduction in power consumption while streaming video, 25 percent faster web browsing, and 15 percent faster app launch times. It also supports Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology with which you can charge your device from 0% to 50% in less than 15 minutes.

Qualcomm says that because of improvements in the Adreno 616 Visual Processing Subsystem architecture, Snapdragon 710-based handsets can expect to see up to 40 percent reduction in power consumption for both gaming and 4K HDR video playback, as well as a 20 percent reduction in power consumption when streaming video, when compared to Snapdragon 660-based smartphones.

Moving on, the chipset comes with new Qualcomm Spectra 250 ISP, which brings improvements to low-light photography, noise reduction, fast autofocus, image stabilisation, real-time bokeh effects and more. It will support resolutions with up to 32MP single ISP and 20MP dual ISP. Additionally, the AI Engine in the Snapdragon 710 supports speedy video style transfer, deep portrait modes and Face ID / Unlock with active depth sensing.

Here is a table comparing the 660, 710 and the 845 side by side complementing the fact that with the 710, Qualcomm is getting closer to flagship grade mobile platforms even for mid-range devices. Qualcomm states that the new SoC will come with "cutting edge Wi-Fi features and enhanced Bluetooth 5 multicast audio with support for ultra-low power wireless earbuds". It is part of the Snapdragon 700 series that was announced past year.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform is available to mobile device manufacturers today and you should find them powering new phones starting in the current quarter.
