FDA Warns Teething Medicines Unsafe, Urges Manufacturers To Stop Selling Them

FDA is asking manufacturers to stop selling products for young children containing the medication. For the past decade, the agency has been urging parents not to buy these products for their babies because of the reports of deaths and illnesses associated with the use of these teething gels and creams. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that caregivers rub or massage the gums with their finger or use teething rings made of firm rubber. Signs of methemoglobinemia include shortness of breath, fatigue, and pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips and nail beds.

Federal health officials in the US warned parents Wednesday about the dangers of teething remedies that contain a popular numbing ingredient and asked manufacturers to stop selling their products intended for babies and toddlers.

The problem is the anesthetic ingredient benzocaine (ben'-zo-cane).

The FDA claimed the teething products with benzocaine has no health benefits because it must be removed immediately from the mouth. FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb also noted that benzocaine, which is an anesthetic, can pose a safety risk when used on children. The FDA has warned companies of legal action if these products are not removed from the market and their sales are not stopped for babies.

On May 22, the FDA issued a warning about over-the-counter products containing benzocaine, citing "serious safety concerns" and a "lack of efficacy for teething". The FDA specifically named gels, sprays, and ointments such as Anbesol, Baby Orajel, Cepacol, Chloraseptic, Hurricaine, Orabase, Orajel, and Topex in its statement.

Wednesday's action comes more than four years after the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to stop sales of teething products. "In addition, we are adding warning statements to more clearly identify the risks and symptoms presented by methemoglobinemia, a rare but serious condition associated with the use of benzocaine". You try every type of chilled teething toy you can get your hands on to relieve the pain in your baby's gums.
