Mike Phelan: Jose Mourinho not replacing Rui Faria a gamble

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has cautioned that Jose Mourinho's plan not to replace outgoing deputy Rui Faria could be a gamble.

The 21-year-old has emerged as a first-team star this season after impressing Mourinho during United's pre-season tour of the United States last summer and the Scotland worldwide has made 23 appearances in all competitions this term.

Wales boss Ryan Giggs and England women's head coach Phil Neville are two high-profile examples, but Carrick stresses that being a good player will not automatically make him successful in his new role.

However, Mourinho was quick to deny these claims instead insisting that the 22-year-old had suffered a knee injury.

It is clear, though, that the seat is being kept warm for the five-time title victor.

Faria released an official statement in which he said: "After a lot of consideration, and with a very heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to move on".

"So I prefer to educate people, to structure my staff in a way where there is space for their education, for their improvement, and I think naturally, when Michael has the coaching and pro licence badges, normally, with the personality he has, with the friendship, with our honesty, I think it will be for him".

"It was an unbelievable reception when I came off", Carrick said of Sunday's match.

Mourinho stated: 'I've to make the selections however in fact my assistants have an opinion. It [the role] changes overnight.

It was a potentially emotional occasion but Carrick preferred to look forward.

'He is one of the best, he's been around for many years and it all fits in.

Michael Carrick's absence on the field will no doubt be felt after he called time on his 12-year stint at the Manchester club.

"At the time, it must have been every United supporter's nightmare, to see them across the road, who have always been in your shadow, and actually you've been laughing at them for a few years, and now they have manager you always wanted, playing the type of football you would give anything for".

The midfielder was given a guard of honour by both teams on Sunday and had a hand in the only goal of the game, playing Juan Mata in behind the defence for the Spaniard to tee up Marcus Rashford.

Yet there was no Anthony Martial in the squad, despite Mourinho's prior indication the Frenchman would start. "Injured Friday in a training session". Unused subs: J Pereira, Jones, Valencia, Lingard.
