Atletico ride blueprint, Griezmann to Europa glory

Antoine Griezmann was "determined" to land his first major trophy with Atletico Madrid as his brace led to Europa League glory against Marseille.

Antoine Griezmann's double put Atletico Madrid on their way in a 3-0 win against Marseille in the Europa League final in Lyon, France, on Wednesday night.

"There has been joy and sadness, but I am so happy and I hope to be able to live moments like this again".

And so it went in Lyon as Griezmann snaffled the first opportunity he got after 21 minutes, calmly slotting beyond Steve Mandanda after errors from the Marseille goalkeeper and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and a forward pass from Gabi combined to set him up for a one-on-one.

Marseille had no answer to Griezmann's mobility and finishing.

Griezmann came close to playing in Diego Costa down the left channel as the half drew to a close, only for Sarr to intercept, but punished Marseille just four minutes after the break.

It remains to be seen how severe Payet's injury is. Griezmann went on to add a second goal shortly after half-time with Gabi completing the scoring as the game entered stoppage time.

Without Payet pulling the strings, Atletico was untroubled until striker Kostas Mitroglou's towering header struck the post in the 81st. Dimitri Payet and Florian Thauvin, two of the chief architects of OM's run to their first European final since 2003/04, linked up to sweep their side up the pitch - Payet then slipped the ball through to Valère Germain.

Marseille had been thoroughly beaten and could only salute their fervent supporters, who outnumbered the Spanish fans in the 59,000-capacity Groupama Stadium and let off flares and firecrackers at the start and end of the game. Most notably, Simeone guided Atletico to a La Liga title in 2014 and made the finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2014 and 2016, both of which resulted in losses to the club's cross-town rival Real Madrid.
