USA offers to help rebuild North Korea economy

Pompeo and different U.S. officers have repeatedly stated they're looking for North Korea's everlasting verifiable denuclearization, whereas North Korean officers have stated that they've already achieved their nuclear aims.

Pompeo spoke in Washington a day after returning from Pyongyang, where he said he had "good" and "substantive" conversations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and secured the release of three American prisoners being held in North Korea.

Pompeo said the United States would remain on board to help develop the North's economy, which has been devastated by its own mismanagement and crippling global sanctions.

North Korea has gone back on peace overtures before, but an IN congressman says there are signs the country is serious this time.

Trump also credited USA maximum pressure campaign to draw North Korea to the table for negotiation and vowed in keeping economic sanctions until the North Korean city takes concrete steps in denuclearize.

The United States and North Korea are technically still at war - a stop-gap armistice ended the brutal three-year Korean war in 1953 and around 30,000 American troops remain in neighboring South Korea, which the U.S. supported in the conflict.

"We had good conversations about the histories of our two nations, the challenges that we've had between us", he said. Therefore, she said, any change in the size of the US forces in South Korea should not be on the table at the summit.

Kang's trip to Washington comes ahead of a planned meeting between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Trump at the White House on May 22. "We're also going to continue maximum pressure until we see that happen".

But North Korea has said it's willing to talk now because it's already succeeded in becoming a nuclear-armed state, fueling skepticism that the North would truly be willing to give those weapons up.

The topic of South Korean troops may come up in the summit, although experts advise that it should not. "We have a shared vision for what we hope when this process is completed the Korean peninsula looks like". In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearisation" has, for years, been a byword for United States troop withdrawals from South Korea - an idea that Kang appeared to reject.

So far, the North Korean regime has made vague pledges to "denuclearize" but has not spelled out what that means, when it would happen or how it would be implemented.

To the USA, that means the North giving up the nuclear weapons it has already built.

KANG KYUNG-WHA: Any issue of the alliance, including the troop presence in our country, is a matter for our two allies to discuss and not to be put on the table with North Korea.
