The post comes right before a rally planned for May 16, where thousands of teachers are expected to meet at the legislative building in Raleigh to raise awareness of teacher pay, overcrowding and the overall condition of schools. So organizers of Wednesday's march encouraged teachers to use a provision in state law that allows them to take personal leave with at least five days' advance notice - as long as a substitute is available and the teacher pays a $50 "required substitute deduction". Teachers believe marching is the right thing to do and will show their students how to make change.

"We've been fighting in North Carolina for the last 10 years against the dismantling of our public schools", says President Bryan Proffitt.

North Carolina's teacher salaries rank 35th nationwide, but teachers there have seen the value of their wages fail to keep up with cost of living increases over the past two decades. He says he would have been teaching sooner but people discouraged him from the profession.

"We need people to judge us on what we've done", Woodhouse said of Republicans.

Walker says his wife told him to go after his passion and that's when he pursued a teaching career.

"We know we need to do more for teachers and that's why the legislature is giving the fifth consecutive pay raise in a row this year", adds Woodhouse.

Walker hopes after the march lawmakers will give more money to increase teacher pay, but also help educate students.

Congressman Walker says North Carolina leads the nation as far as what percentage of the budget goes toward education.

While Congressman Mark Walker is a federal lawmaker, he's certainly paying attention to what's going on with teachers at the state level.

According to the National Education Association, North Carolina teachers ranked 39th in average teacher pay previous year, with an average salary of $49,970.

Teachers are demanding the state catch up in teacher pay and per-pupil expenditure within the next four years.
