Facebook closed 583m fake accounts in first three months of 2018

The report details Facebook's enforcement efforts from October to March and covers hate speech, fake accounts and spam, terrorist propaganda, graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity.

Since the fallout over political firm Cambridge Analytica obtaining millions of Facebook users' data without their permission, Facebook reiterated its commitment to being more transparent.

In categories where Facebook did provide information on such offending posts, it reported an increase.

Facebook has a policy of removing content that glorifies the suffering of others.

While the removal of 583 million fake Facebook accounts is certainly noteworthy, it does little to address concerns regarding actual user privacy. During Q1, Facebook found and flagged 85.6% of such content it took action on before users reported it, up from 71.6% in Q4.

The posts that keep the Facebook reviewers the busiest are those showing adult nudity or sexual activity - quite apart from child pornography, which is not covered by the report. Facebook boasts 2.2 billion monthly active users, and if Facebook's AI tools didn't catch these fake accounts flooding the social network, it would have gained than a quarter of its total population in just 89 days.

Rosen noted that the technology to spot hate speech is still not up to scratch, so content review teams check for instances.

A spokeswoman later said that Facebook blocks "disturbing or sensitive content such as graphic violence" so that users under 18 can not see it "regardless of whether it is removed from Facebook". This number apparently doesn't include millions of accounts that are blocked from being registered in the first place.

Facebook says 0.22-0.27% of views by users were of content that violated its standards around graphic violence in the period.

Understanding the context of speech often requires human eyes - is something hateful, or is it being shared to condemn hate speech or raise awareness about it?

Facebook's vice president of product management, Guy Rosen, said in a blog post Tuesday about the newly-released report that nearly all of the 837 million spam posts Facebook took down in the first quarter of 2018 were found by Facebook before anyone had reported them.

Last month Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced criticism from civil society groups in Myanmar over how his company failed to detect violent messages from spreading across Facebook Messenger.

Terrorist propaganda (ISIS, Al Qaeda, and affiliates): Facebook says it took action on 1.9 million pieces of such content, and found and flagged 99.5% of such content before anyone reported it.

The world's largest social network published enforcement numbers for the first time on Wednesday, revealing millions of standards violations in the six months to March. The company attributed the decline to the "variability of our detection technology's ability to find and flag" fakes.
