Ex-CIA employee in leak probe 'deeply saddened'

Recall that in 2017, the website WikiLeaks published thousands of documents, allegedly belonging to the Center kiberrazvedki Central Intelligence Agency.

As CBS News reported a year ago, the stolen documents describe clandestine methods for bypassing or defeating encryption, antivirus tools and other protective security features meant to keep the private information of citizens and corporations safe from prying eyes. He revealed extraordinary details about the capabilities of the United States to spy on computers and phones around the world, but the Vault 7 leaks showed how such spying is actually done, the current and former officials argued.

The Washington Post first reported on Schulte's relation to the case. But that failed to provide the evidence that prosecutors needed to indict Schulte with illegally giving the information to WikiLeaks. They conducted a number of search warrants on the defendant's residence.

At a January hearing on child pornography charges filed against Schulte, an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of NY said the government conducted several search warrants on Schulte's home. Prosecutors say he used the program at his apartment in NY, but they haven't provided evidence that he did it to leak classified information. Still, the article said, Schulte advised one user, "Just don't put anything too illegal on there".

Schulte is being held without bail on child pornography charges brought against him in Manhattan federal court. He has pleaded not guilty.

It is unclear why he has not been charged or cleared in connection with the theft and subsequent leak. The government immediately had enough evidence to establish that he was a target of that investigation. Prosecutors say he had a cache of it on a server he maintained. It is not clear whether the government is pursuing contractors as part of the leak investigation, but prosecutors have not mentioned anyone other than Schulte in court proceedings.

At January's pretrial hearing for Schulte, Laroche said the material was taken from the CIA during the over six years that Schulte worked for the agency in various positions, including technical development officer.

Schulte also claimed that he reported "incompetent management and bureaucracy" at the CIA to that agency's inspector general as well as a congressional oversight committee. The documents themselves covered a period from 2013 to 2016, when Schulte had been employed at the agency.

He also said that because of 'unfortunate circumstances the Federal Bureau of Investigation ultimately made the snap judgement that (he) was guilty of the leaks and targeted (him)'. No charges have been filed against Schulte in that investigation, and his defense lawyers have insisted he was not involved.
