Chinese double amputee conquers Everest on fifth attempt

He scripted history by becoming the first double amputee to climb the world's highest peak from Nepal side and second to climb the peak.

Some 340 foreign climbers and many Nepalese Sherpa guides are attempting to climb Everest this month.

What makes Xia's journey to the Everest more interesting is the fact that his legs were amputated below his knees after he suffered a frostbite while climbing the mountain forty-four years ago.

Xia Boyu, a 69-year-old hit by frostbite on Everest over four decades ago, and Steve Plain, who was almost paralysed by an accident four years ago, were among the first to summit the world's highest mountain.

But at the start of the year, it appeared the moment would never come for Xia.

Australian Plain became the fastest climber to scale the highest peaks in seven continents, taking 117 days for a feat popularly called the Seven Summits, after he scaled Mount Everest early on Monday, his expedition company in Nepal said. Shortly before the New Year, Nepal's government sought to ban double amputees, along with solo and blind climbers, from scaling all of the mountains within its borders unless they could obtain a doctor's written permission. "It also represents a personal challenge, a challenge of fate", Xia told AFP, a month before heading to the mountain. Inglis completed his climb in 2006 as the first double amputee to reach the summit from the Chinese side. Another climb the following year was aborted after the Nepal natural disaster.

"He reached the summit this morning, along with seven other members of his team", confirmed Dawa Futi Sherpa of Imagine Trek and Expedition. I have to realise it.

And in 2016, he nearly had a successful climb and had only 200 metres left when a treacherous blizzard forced him to turn back.

He followed that with Mount Aconcagua in South America, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Carstensz Pyramid in Papua New Guinea, which covers Australia and Oceania, Mount Elbrus in Europe and Denali in North America.

Plain, 36, from Perth, climbed Mount Vinson in Antarctica on January 16.

Meanwhile a team which deployed to fix ropes from Everest's north in Tibet reached the summit on Monday, said the Himalayan Database which monitors climbers.

"Three and a half years ago I was lying in hospital with a broken neck and at that time set myself the goal", he wrote on Facebook after reaching the summit.

He beat the previous speed record by nine days and was presented with an award at the peak.

Plain, the Australian climber, complained of long queues on the way to the summit.
