British rugby player dies after visiting nightclub on Sri Lanka tour

Thomas Baty and Thomas Howard of Durham, England, were both admitted to hospital in Colombo on Sunday May 13, complaining of breathing difficulties.

They had been touring the country with Durham-based Clems Pirates RFC.

However one of the two players admitted to the hospital has died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The 22-member rugby side, Clems Pirates had arrived in Sri Lanka early last week to play a couple of friendly matches.

In a statement, Durham City Rugby Football Club said it was with "great sadness" that they announced the death of 26-year-old Tom Baty on Tuesday afternoon.

A British amateur rugby player has died and a team-mate is critically ill after visiting a nightclub while on tour in Sri Lanka.

Durham City Rugby Football Club, which oversees the team, confirmed Mr Howard had died after "suffering breathing problems".

This follows the death of teammate Thomas Howard, 25, who lost his life on Monday.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received from our members, friends and the wider rugby family; they are very much appreciated at this hard time".

"The club requests that the Howard and Baty families' right to privacy is respected and upheld at this most hard time".

The following morning the two players fell ill and were taken to hospital, local police said, but the deaths are not rugby-related.

A British High Commission spokesman in Colombo said both families were being supported, and they were in contact with the Sri Lankan medical services.
