Rain and Pakistan rally dampen Ireland's Test bow

Rankin, the 15th man ever, and the first since Kepler Wessels (Australia and South Africa) 25 years ago, to play Test cricket for two nations after making a lone appearance for England in 2014, had an uncertain Azhar (four) edging to Porterfield at second slip.

And off the next ball, Murtagh trapped Imam-ul-Haq with an inswinger.

Azhar Ali dug out a Murtagh delivery and called for a quick legside single.

In a huge scramble, Ul-Haq made a last-ditch dive towards the stumps only to collide with the Irish duo of wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien and fielder Tyrone Kane.

With Haris Sohail and Asad Shafiq at the crease, Pakistan rebuilt after being put into bat and did not lose another wicket before lunch.

The 22-year-old was soon moving around but took some time before the physiotherapist helped him back to his feet, ready to face his first ball in Test cricket.

The opening day's play was rained off meaning that the clash between Ireland and Pakistan at Malahide Castle was delayed until Saturday, which cost Cricket Ireland a pricey £66,000.

Ireland went on to bag back-to-back wickets to make it 13-2 in what was a memorable start to their inaugural Test match.

The left-hander, who came into this match following fifties in Pakistan's two warm-up fixtures, against Kent and Northamptonshire, square-drove Murtagh for a stylish four.

The seventh-wicket stand was already worth 109 runs and the pair had moved Pakistan away from a slightly shaky position before tea, where they had been 159 for six at one stage, to give them a decided edge after day two, the first day having been a complete washout.

Shafiq began to steady the Pakistan ship and reached his 50 from 107 balls after the restart.

Shafiq square-cut Kane for four, with left-hander Haris glancing Thompson for a legside boundary.

Pakistan, sent into bat by Ireland captain William Porterfield, lost two wickets in successive balls on a pitch offering some sideways movement.

They didn't have to wait long for a second as Murtagh struck next ball, trapping Imam leg-before for seven on his Test debut with a ball that would have hit middle stump.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed would also fall before tea, Thompson taking his second wicket with Stirling again taking the catch at second slip after a wafted effort from the batsman.
