SpaceX's NextGen Rocket Scores a Perfect Landing

As for the problems with the launch attempt on Thursday, SpaceX did not say much.

SpaceX's updated version of Falcon 9 rocket "Block 5" lifted off in Florida on Friday, boosting Bangladesh's first communications satellite into orbit.

The company stated that the Block 5 model "is created to be capable of 10 or more refurbishments, and is very limited", which will help shorten the time between successive launches, which the company has been doing for some time.

The rocket's first and second stages separated about 2.5 minutes into the flight.

The Block 5 variation of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket will be the last major upgrade the company's workhorse rocket.

According to plan, Falcon 9 will orbit the moon, under the title "Bangabandhu-1". Thales Alenia Space, the French-Italian company that built the satellite, said it would provide citizens in Bangladesh "access to a wide range of broadcast and communications services, including phone services, backhaul, radio, direct-to-home TV and Internet".

The payload of the launch is the Bangabandhu Satellite-1, Bangladesh's first geostationary communications satellite.

Company founder Elon Musk said the new rocket will eventually make space launches as routine as airline flights. If all goes as planned, SpaceX would fly the same rocket twice in a single day in 2019, which would be another first for the company. The backup window for the launch set was set for 4:14 p.m. EDT Friday. Weather may be a little iffy, though; there's a 60 percent chance of good conditions.

The booster's first stage executed a flawless touchdown nine minutes after the launch and landed, just as planned, on SpaceX's "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. The brief launch window didn't give engineers enough time to identify and correct the technical glitch.

Ultimately, the Block 5 will be the rocket SpaceX depends upon to send humans to the International Space Station.

"In the continuous advancement of Bangladesh another milestone is added today", said Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a video address aired on SpaceX's launch webcast. In addition, the launch will be the first for the new, already the fifth modification of the missile.
