Facebook Messenger launches translations by intelligent assistant M

The social media giant said that the new features would deepen connections between people and businesses. The French cosmetics company, for instance, allows people to try on new makeup and share what it looks like with friends. Once a business interacts with a person on Messenger, the business can prompt the user to open the Facebook camera, which will be pre-populated with brand-specific filters and AR effects.

Perhaps the most important new feature is augmented reality in Messenger - and it could seriously bring AR to the masses.

The new feature, which is being tested in closed beta, will allow a roster of four select companies - ASUS, Nike, Kia, and Sephora - to show users a preview of something they want to buy beforehand using augmented reality, technology that superimposes a computer generated image onto the real world. Now when people connected through Marketplace receive a message in a language that is different from their default language in Messenger, M will ask them if they want to translate the message. Facebook rolled out M in Messenger with limited functionality a year ago.

Facebook Messenger announced that starting today, its intelligent assistant M will be able to interpret words in bilingual conversations. At launch, Messenger will offer translations from English to Spanish, and vice-versa, in conversations taking place in the United States.

Translations by M Suggestions is powered by the same neural network-powered translation engine Facebook uses to translate Facebook and Instagram posts and comments. Messenger is gaining momentum at scale as we continue to invest in new platform features and improve existing ones thanks to the feedback from our community.

Other new capabilities include new tracking capabilities (body tracking, hand tracking and high-fidelity face tracking), as well as background segmentation to separate people from their background.

To that end, Facebook also announced an update to its AR Studio software for developers, making it easier for them to build three-dimensional models that can be overlaid over the real world.

WhatsApp, another Facebook-owned messaging service with more than one billion users, has sworn off advertising.
